SPAs are specialized professional associations in specific content areas of study. For the purpose of national recognition, SPA standards must be reviewed and approved by CAEP. For the purpose of CAEP’s accreditation, IRA/ILA is the organization that has its standards approved for national recognition following certain common guidelines that all SPAs follow. These standards are updated/ revised every seven years based on the developments in research and practice in that field. The current 2010 standards are up for revision in 2017. I would recommend that the commenter send her suggestions for the revision of the IRA/ILA standards, so that it reflects current scientific knowledge in the field, to Diane Kern (ILA’s SPA Coordinator).
